Local Highlight – Mckay Used Books & CDs

Mckay is located directly off of exit 199 via 40W. I discovered Mckay a few years ago before they moved locations and I easily stop by at least once a month! You will find the best deals on blurays, dvds, books, comic books, cds, and vinyl!! My husband just picked up the first three Pirates of the Caribbean dvd’s for under $5! The facility is HUGE and never lacking in selection. When visiting Nashville or if you are looking for something to do on a slow Saturday I definitely recommend stopping by this amazing store; however, I also recommend that you also block off a couple of hours when visiting because you will want/need it!!

You can see the sign from the intersate! Don't worry you won't miss it!!

Local Highlights – BOOKS at Cummins Station + Home Library Designs

I have always been one of those individuals that dreamed of having the library from Beauty and the Beast for my very own. Personally I find the smell of an old book to be the absolute best. With that being said the ability to have a whole room/space that not only smells that way but after a long day can dust off the old imagination that you rarely use now that you are not a child, enlighten you on various concepts, and take you to far off places is wonderful gift not only to yourself but to everyone that lives with you. After eating at M. Market the other day I stopped by BOOKS which is directly next door. This beautifully unique store is a representation of something you might see if you have frequented small towns in Europe but not something many would expect to stumble upon in downtown Nashville. You may need help getting the books that you want but I promise a visit to this store is definitely worth it.

Another view of the gorgeous book shelves that line this one of a kind store. It is kind of like a maze of books which for the person who doesn’t like to read may be terrifying; however, for me was absolutely wonderful!

After visiting BOOKS I naturally started to think about home libraries. Eventually I would love to have one of my own and you really don’t need a ton of space in order to have one. Below I want to showcase some different design ideas I have found over the course of the last couple of days that indicate how realistic it can be to have a library of your own.

Living Room/Office Library Spaces:

This room combines traditional and modern furniture. It has high ceilings which allow for the use of a library ladder. I want a library ladder so much!! How about you?

I just love the feel of this room with comfy leather furniture, a gorgeous view to the outdoors, and custom built-ins this home library has a way of mixing different elements to create a beautiful feel.

I love the pop of yellow the mid century sofa with casters adds to the rooms over all feel and the combination of different materials be it industrial metal (with the lamps), wood coffee table, ornamental rug, and others that make this room so eclectic and beautiful. This library even has storage space on the bottom shelf for your records!

Bedroom Libraries:

Want to cozy up at night and read until you fall asleep? A library in your bedroom may be the perfect place to store your many books! This bedroom library is classic with a texture wall separating the the built-ins in order to give way for you bed’s headboard.

This is a more modern take on the bedroom library with various pops of color making it unique.

Sometimes space really is the issue in securing your own in home library. A neat solution to this problem is that most dining/breakfast rooms have a long wall that you can decorate anyway you want! I love this idea because it takes something like a library that is traditionally seen as having to be in an office space or living room space and turns that notion upside down to make your space truly eclectic and unique.

Dining room libraries:

Many older homes have built-ins in the dining room that can be challenging to decorate if you don’t have china that you want to display. Utilizing this space for your library is the perfect way to showcase your collection of books.

I love how this dining room goes floor to ceiling with it’s library. The gorgeous dinning table with a view to the outside only helps make this design that much more beautiful!

Does your home have a library that you would like to share on the blog? Or do you have any questions about today’s local highlight BOOKS in Cummins Station? Send me a message!

Local Highlights – M. Market Deli

M. Market is located in Cummins Station at 209 Tenth Avenue S. Suite 213 it is a self described meat market and delicatessen. The first time I ate at M. Market deli it was probably right after it opened and I had no idea what to expect and now I truly believe it should be on your list of places to eat in Nashville especially for lunch. Today I went back by to take pictures and showcase this darling little restaurant and it’s beyond amazing food.

My lunch! I ordered the Tennessee Grilled Cheese.

This is more than just a sandwich and so much more than just a grilled cheese. It is almost as thought Angels flew down from Heaven to deliver it unto us all. It was THAT good! It is Brie Cheese, Jalapeno Preserves, Served on Sour Dough Bread. Believe it or not the jalapeno preserves are sweet and not hot at all. I asked them about it and they said it mixed with peaches. How they do it? I have no idea but it is AMAZING. I ate every bite and even though I was full I still wanted more.

DIY Hanging Light Bulb Vase

You have seen the weddings and events that seem to take every day objects and turn them into something creative and unique. The hanging light bulb vase is an easy project that can add so much be it to your next event or you can make several of various sizes and hang them in your home. This is also a very environmentally friendly project as you can recycle old light bulbs that you no longer have use for. I first made the hanging light bulb vase about a year ago for my dear friend’s bridal shower.

Light Bulb Vase Complete 1

In order to start your hanging light bulb vase project you will need the following tools. 1) Light Bulb (any shape or size) 2) Needle nose pliers 3) Small Phillips screw driver 4) Flat head screw driver 5) Protective glasses this is very important as little glass pieces are known to fly up through out the process. Which ever type of glasses you use is up to you!

Light Bulb Vase 1

Step One: Take light bulb and flat head screw driver to lift metal piece at the bottom of the light bulb.

Light Bulb Vase 2

Step Two: Use needle nose pliers to pull off the metal piece at the bottom of the light bulb.

Light Bulb Vase 4

Step Three: Insert Phillips screw driver into small hole at the bottom of the light bulb. Proceed to spin and wiggle about in order to break the black piece.

Light Bulb Vase 7

This is how the broken black piece should look:

Step Four: Use one of the screw drivers to break the glass on the inside of the light bulb **IMPORTANT** Make sure at this point that you are wearing your protective glasses.

Step Five: Empty glass from the light bulb.

Step Six: Use Phillips screw driver as a drill to delicately put holes on either side of the light bulb.

Step Seven: If your light bulb has writing on it use as sponge with a scrubbing side, soap, and water and it will scrub right off!

This whole process while taking pictures took just about 10 minutes. Once you get into your rhythm you should be able to do it at a faster (yet safe) pace. If you have any further questions about this project please send me a message!

Eclectic Lighting

With the profession that I am in I look and view houses all the time. I think a simple change that can make your home truly one of a kind is to update the lighting with fixtures that you love!

I think lighting tends to be over looked when decorating your home and yet it can add so much character. I wanted to do blog post highlighting some of the lighting fixtures I believe to have to the ability to make a real contribution to the uniqueness of your home.

From Restoration Hardware this is the Clemson Classic Double Pendant. I have seen this particular lighting fixture in a dining room of an open house I attended and just loved how it added so much to the over all design of the home.

Another fantastic dining room chandelier is the Modern Industrial Geometric Copper Hanging Chandelier from Etsy store KhalimaLights.

Foyer Chandeliers can make a real statement as they are the first thing people see when they come into your home. If you change out any lighting in your home the dining room chandelier and the foyer chandelier are the two I would personally change first.

I have never seen a chandelier quite like this one! From Etsy store AugustRushLights the Tube cage Edison bulb chandelier. This foyer chandelier is set to truly make a statement.

Have a large foyer and need a large chandelier this rustic and re-purposed wagon wheel would be perfect in any Nashville home. From Etsy shop RusticChandeliers.

I have noticed that Orb like chandeliers are becoming increasingly popular and yet I still LOVE them! This is the Foucault’s Orb chandelier from Restoration Hardware.

Vanity lights can add so much as well in terms of setting the right feel when you walk in to take your nightly bath or when you first wake up in the morning and start getting ready. It can truly make a difference in the over all feel of your home.

The Reclaimed Wood Mason Jar Light Fixture from TheBallJarShop on etsy is a very Nashville-esque vanity light fixture.

The Ludlow Pendant would be stunning above a double vanity. From PaleBlueAtlasClub via Etsy.

I am just can not get enough of Pulley lights! I have never seen one in a home and these small chandeliers would be an amazing addition to your breakfast room.

The Warehouser is a custom pulley light chandelier from MoonshineLamp via Etsy.

Industrial pendant light from enclifDesigns via Etsy.

Love Pulley lights but already have a breakfast room chandelier? A wall sconce can add a plethora of character be it up a stair case or on either side of the fireplace. This wall light pipe from WestNinthVintage via Etsy.

And just for fun some table lamps that can be a real statement piece.

For the Nashville musician this microphone table lamp from NomadGeneralStore via Etsy is a sure way to add your passion to the decor in your home.

The Time Traveler lamp from steampunkartist1 via Etsy looks like some sort of Tesla invention from the early 1900′s. You are sure to be the only one of your friends with a lighting piece like this one!

It is a bit pricey but just too cool! I love this reclaimed robot lamp. The Electric Heater Lamp is from BenclifDesigns via etsy.

If you have unique lighting idea that you would like to see on the blog please send me a message!

World Cup in Nashville & Eclectic Americana

If there was a stronger word than love I would use it to describe my feelings towards the FIFA World Cup! To be honest I am not a big sports fan normally; however, having the opportunity for one month every four years to watch thousands if not millions of people from all over the world get together for the purpose of supporting their country is truly amazing. Nashville is feeling the wave of world cup fever with USA game gatherings all over the city!

With all the excitement my national pride is at an all time high and with that being said I have always been a fan of Americana decor; however, when actually conceptualized into reality it tends to be a bit over done. I know many of my friends think grandma’s guest bedroom when I say Americana and I hope to help Americana take it’s rightful place in our homes once again.

This beautiful bedroom is truly eclectic Americana. I love the combination of Aztec elements and yet feels so American at the same time.

Another example of that shows how you can do Americana decor without going over the top. This beautiful living room combines vintage elements with the Americana theme in order to give it that unique feel.

Another great idea that I personally love to incorporate into my Americana decorating is the use of historical artifacts/art pieces. It can give you that patriotic feel you are going for.

You can frame old newspapers pertaining to topics that interest you. This particular newspaper was found on Etsy. This is an inexpensive and yet discussion starter design piece.

If you have kids or even a rambunctious dog like I do and owning an historical piece makes you nervous luckily there are reproduction prints that you can purchase and frame to ad that feel.

Art.com has many digitally restored WWII propaganda reproduction prints that help to tell the story of our past while still conveying its artistic authenticity.

When it comes to furniture pieces and bedding if you keep it simple you can do more else where and not end up with a cluttered mess. I have tendency to go over board when I start piecing things together. If my idea is to have a yellow and blue kitchen I have the urge to buy everything I find that is yellow or blue or both that I think is pretty and try to put it all together whether or not the blues match. Getting overly excited while designing is a mistake many people make; however, if you keep your big purchases simple or neutral you can more easily change out your smaller purchases without breaking the bank if you want to redesign the room or if it just doesn’t feel right.

This beautiful yet classic bedding from pottery barn would make a fantastic addition to any Americana themed bedroom.

With a red throw across the foot of the bed and a blue accent pillow you have Americana bedding without being to much.

I am just filled to the brim with pride for the USA and I hope you are too! If you like the Americana theme or have more Americana theme ideas that you would like to submit please let me know as I would love to see them!
